On February 14, 2017, the beautiful Caribbean nation of St. Vincent & the Grenadines (SVG), will see the official opening of the Argyle International Airport (AIA) - the first of its kind in the history of the 32-island archipelago. The AIA is a key part of the Government of SVG's vision to create the right local conditions for attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into the local economy - with key investment opportunities in Tourism, International Financial Services, Agriculture & Fisheries, the Creative Industries, and Light Manufacturing. With plans to decommission the country's current airport site once operations commence at the AIA - making way for the proposed development of a modern city - a bounty of investment opportunities are likely to arise along the 14 km corridor connecting the old and new airport sites, and the current capital city, Kingstown. With plans to develop a new city that reflects the goals and aspirations, while meeting the needs of the local population, consideration will likely be given to the conversion of Kingstown into a cultural capital, with a focus on preserving the city's history while drastically improving its aesthetics and ergonomics. The continued facilitation of the Government's drive to attract FDI over the medium-term, will demand improved infrastructure along major existing transportation routes, supplemented by new alternative routes and modes of public transportation. These and more will be discussed in an upcoming article highlighting key opportunities and challenges for urban development in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. But for now, please join me in celebrating this historic moment in my nation's history.
